Travel Log October 16th - 31st, 2004

It was great to get on the road again, however, due to the pain, Cindy had to be on medication, but she survived.  We only travelled to San Diego.  Once in San Diego, we stayed put, waiting for our Visa's and insurance papers to come in the mail from Vagabundos (a travel club that we joined that focuses on travel in Mexico).  We had ordered everything we needed to cross the boarder from Vagabundos, it was just easier that way, as it was our first time coming into Baja.

Fry's Electronics in San Diego, CA

Fry's was so huge it looked like a Casino from the outside.  We had never seen anything quite like it before.

Inside of Fry's Electronics in San Diego, CA

Check out the salt water aquarium in the middle there.  There were a number of salt water aquariums through out this mega store.  The decor of the store was something else, with each area having its own aquatic theme.  Pretty incredible!

2002 Country Coach Allure, 2 slides, Diesel

While we were in San Diego we went to look at new and used motorhomes just for fun.  We found a used 2002 Country Coach Allure, with 2 slides that we just fell in love with.  We actually started to negotiate with them on it, and on our coach and then took a step back and decided not to proceed at this time.  However, we took lots of pictures and here they are.

Gorgeous coach!  But the timing is just not right for us.  And we found out it has since sold.  See more pictures below...

And finally Baja California, Mexico!!!!

Yeh!!  We are finally in Baja,  We did not take any pictures as we came across the border, everything was so new and we were unsure of what to do and where to go.  We bypassed Tijuana intentionally, too big!!  So no pictures there.  Then we traveled to Ensenada and we couldn't believe we did not take pictures there either.  The reason is that they were having some major rain, and there was extensive flooding.  We only stayed for one night and then hightailed it south...

We saw some gorgeous west coast Pacific views, but again for whatever reason we did not take pictures.  We think we were so caught up in our excitement we forgot.  It was also a bit stressful being in a new country and we were very focused on the road.

Catavina Boulder Field, Baja California, Mexico

This area was incredible.  The cactus you see in the center of the photo is called a Cardon Cactus.  They grow very tall and are just beautiful.  Also please note the number and size of the boulders in this picture and the next few pictures.  There is no way to capture it in a picture and no way to describe just how incredible it was.  Take a look...

That is a Cardon Cactus behind us.  We told you they were big.  Aren't they something else?  Also note how barren it is.  Very beautiful!

A cactus like this can even make us feel small.   :)

The tall skinny hairy looking cactus you see to the left of the screen is called a Cirio, they also are very tall like the Cardon Cactus, however, we did not see nearly as many of them.  The Cardon is all over the place.

Rancho Santa Ynez, just south of Catavina, Baja California, Mexico

One night we stayed at this great place called Rancho Santa Ynez.  It was really nothing special to look at.  Very flat and dry and a few trees.  However, all three owners, Mother, Father and Son, were about 5 ft tall.  They were so cute and so kind.  The son, who would have been about our age, came walking out of the field with this whole heard of cows, a donkey and a dog following him.  He walked everywhere in his bare feet and was such a sweetheart.  He told us his Mom would be cooking dinner at 6:00 pm, when we inquired if we could eat in their little restaurant.  We ate our first true Mexican meal of burritos and tacos consisting of brown beans, rice, and soft shelled tortillas filled with shredded beef and all the fixins', it was delicious!!  We really enjoyed our stay there and would recommend it to anyone, for one night...

San Ignacio, Baja California Mexico

We spent a night here in this wonderful little park in San Ignacio.  It was clean and very pretty right by a river.  This oasis has thousands of Palm Trees, whereas the rest of Baja is so dry.  This valley has three types of palms, date, coconut and bananas.

This is at the same park.  We just wanted to point out those long logs in the front of the picture are actually like sticks attached to each other, with a hollow centre in the log.  They are what is found inside of the Cardon Cactus's we pictured earlier.  We were surprised to learn that there was wood inside of cactus's, we both thought that they were a succulent plant all the way through.  They are used in the construction of Palapa's, fences and many other applications.

See the yellow area on these palms, those are dates...

Here is a close up of those dates.  Barry tried one and said it was actually quite tasty and sweet.  However, he said he could tell that they were not ripe yet.  By the look on Tiki's face, we think he would like to determine their sweetness for himself...

We are not sure what these are called or what type of tree they were on, but they looked like a huge pea pod.

A beautiful home in San Ignacio, we just loved the warm colors, the style, the layout: what a pretty place.

Note the white cement ditch all along the highway.  Although the highways were in very good shape, they were extremely narrow.  We would brace ourselves every time a transport went by.  Our mirrors were inches apart.  And everyone travels so fast down here.  We actually took only a few days to get to our destination, so that we could get there as quickly as possible, it was not a relaxing drive.  Very stressful.  But well worth it.  The landscape was incredible.  Not what we were expecting though.  We thought we would see a lot more of the ocean on the way down, and we were not expecting as many mountains.  It was very barren and mountainous, we really enjoyed the trip and all of the different topography.

Just North of Santa Rosalia, Baja California Sur, Mexico

Our first glimpse of the Sea of Cortez!!  This was on the highway just north of Santa Rosalia.  It was great to be near the ocean again.  We knew at this point we were within hours of our destination.  We were so excited, just like a couple of kids :)

Santa Rosalia was a great little town.  It looked like it was straight out of an old western movie.  We were able to park the coach right on the main street and go for a nice walk around.

Mulege, Baja California Sur, Mexico

This is the little town of  Mulege.  Population 3111.  This town is about 20 minutes north of where we will be staying for a number of months.  This little town is where we will get drinking, water, groceries, mail, and anything else we need.  More pictures of Mulege in later months.  We actually did not stop as there was no way our coach would fit down their narrow quaint streets...and we were anxious to get to the beach and get set up!!

Bahia Concepcion, Baja California Sur, Mexico

Ok here we are!!  This is our first glimpse of the Bahia Concepcion, we will be staying on a beach here called Playa Santispac.  The next number of pictures are of the same bay getting closer and closer.  We were so excited and happy to be here.

This is the beach where we will be staying for a number of months.  The Palapas are made of palm leaves, palm posts and cardon.  They are wonderful little huts, in most cases, with a few very large 'house type' palapas.  The beach faces south, is surrounded by mountains and a beautiful bay with islands...absolutely gorgeous.  It is everything we have been dreaming of.  We are so happy to be here.  There are two restaurants here: Ana's and Ray's.  Everything else we will have to go to Mulege for.  What fun.  The rest of the adventure begins.

As you can see we are set up and ready to relax, swim, snorkel, do some boating, and some sailing, hiking, and whatever other adventures this beautiful country has to offer...it is so good to be here!
