Travel Log, February 1st - 28th, 2005
Part 2
As mentioned in the updates for the first part of February, we are in Playa Los Cerritos. We stayed here for almost a whole month. It is just gorgeous here and we had a wonderful time. Near the end of the month, we started our travels north again, heading back towards Playa Santispac... In one of our original plans, we had decided to stay at Santispac until May, however, our friends and neighbors Jim & Deb had to go back to the States earlier than planned and so we have decided to continue our travels and head towards mainland Mexico's west coast...

Here is another Cardon Cactus, they are just incredible, so tall and
sturdy looking, the base is so thick it looks just like a tree. |
|

|
As previously mentioned, this is a very popular spot for
surfing, you can rent surf boards here right on the beach. We really
enjoyed watching the surfers and some of them are out there from dawn
until dusk... We really enjoyed our body boarding, but had to be very
careful because of the undertow. If it caught you, it could flip you
around and around underwater, and could be very scary. Actually, two
older couples were body boarding and one of the men went missing and was
found the next day. He had drowned, even though he was with other people
the whole time. It was very sad, and everyone was affected by this
tragic accident. |
|
This was the view from up on the hill, looking down on the
whole beach. What a spectacular view! There was great hiking in the
hills here, and wonderful walking on the beach. We got a lot of exercise
here. You could walk for miles and miles, with the ocean breeze to
keep you cool... |
|
Here is one of our hiking days, we had a wonderful time,
look at some of the pictures of the view! They are just spectacular! |

Take note in a lot of the pictures how Tiki is most often tucked in and around Cindy's feet. Isn't he cute :) He loved it here...
One
time Cindy went for a walk by herself and a saw a very large rattlesnake.
Thank goodness she had her radio, she was able to call Barry and tell him where
she was, so that he could zoom over on the scooter to see it too. We
forgot the camera though in all the rush to get there... oh well, you will
just have to take our word for it. It stretched right across the
path, headed under some brush and coiled itself up in the shade...very,
very cool! |

|
|
|
See the surfers!! This one was of their favourite spots! They
surfed for hours... from where you see them they would ride the waves to
the left all the way to the shore, obviously not towards these rocks... |
|
We both had an opportunity to fly our kites here at Los Cerritos. On
this particular day, Barry was able to put up a number of his kites all at
once. It was beautiful to see and caused quite a stir on the beach.
You can see our coach there in the background right at the end of the road
before the beach starts...it was a gorgeous spot... |
|
Not a cloud in the sky... |
|
We thought this was kind of a neat shot...the way the sun was right behind
the octopus's head... |
|
A friendly local in El Pescadero... |
|
Farmland in El Pescadero. The fruits and vegetables in this little town are some of the best we have ever had... as mentioned before they are absolutely delicious. It is amazing to eat them ripened and freshly picked off the vine...
Oh, and we often got quite a kick out of their fences, the wood they use
is often from Cardon, or local trees, and most often the fence posts were
wonderfully uneven in height and width...they looked just great. We
also saw fences that they needed to block the wind and they would weave
flattened cardboard boxes into them...I guess they don't get much rain in
Baja :) ... |
|
We were zooming around on our scooters one day and came across these small
yellow furry things growing in these bushes... |
|
Once we cut into them, they looked like cucumbers or kiwi... we are still
not sure what they were. We had planned on doing some research on
the internet or in one of our Baja books to see if we could find
them...however...well...we never got around to it yet :) |
|
|
|
|
|
Barry enjoys the view while he brushes his teeth, obviously no idea that
Cindy had the camera... |
|
Some cute children that used to come with their family near our camping
spot at the beach at Los Cerritos. We had some really nice neighbors
here, their names were Jodi and Al, and they often handed out toys to the
local children, very kind and generous people. And as you can tell,
this precious little girl really likes her new clown... We also met
another really nice couple on our other side named Brian and Margaret...
all the best to all of you, happy travels! |
|
|
|
|
|
As you can see, we had some of the most incredible sunsets at Los
Cerritos, it was just gorgeous there! |
|
A local fellow named Charlie who used to come and collect beer & pop cans
each morning at sunrise... |
|
|
|
One of the things we are still getting used to (and having a hard time with) in Mexico is the litter. A group of young men drove up in a couple of vehicles, blared their wonderful Mexican music, and starting drinking beer. By the time they left, there were beer cans all over the place. We collected them all for Charlie :)
There are places were there is garbage, loads of garbage, all over the
side of the road. One time we boondocked at a Pemex Gas Station and
we saw numerous people throw bags of garbage over the walls. I guess
'out of site, out of mind'... it is so sad... They have some of the
most beautiful land and beaches here... |
|
When we were preparing to leave Los Cerritos we noticed this cactus was in
bloom... so pretty... |
|
Leaving the Los Cerritos area and heading north through El Pescadero... |
|
Travelling through Todos Santos on our way north... There were lots
of properties for sale in Todos Santos and some of the most beautiful
beach front properties in Baja...very nice. A lot of "Gringos" have
retired and moved here, it is a really 'artsy' area, and very beautiful... |
|
By the end of the month of February we had made it to San Carlos. It
is a fishing village off the west coast of Baja. We only stayed 2
nights as the poverty there was very disturbing. We had a nice place
on the beach, however. We took our scooters down to look around
and decided we wanted to move on...very sad... However, as you will
see in "Faces of Mexico" this is also where we met Henry and he was a real
sweetheart... |
