Travel Log, April 1st - 30th, 2005
Part 3
In this segment of our travel log we leave the State of Sonora and entered the State of Sinaloa. We traveled south along the Mex 15, the main north/south highway, until we got to a turn off just north of Los Mochis. From there, we head east again, inland to the small town of El Fuerte. El Fuerte has just as much history and just as many colonial buildings as Alamos did, however, it has not been restored to the same degree. Regardless, it is a wonderful place as you will see in the following pictures. In El Fuerte we parked the coach, arranged a babysitter for our sweet Tiki, and took the train up to Copper Canyon. We spent a few days touring around El Fuerte. But then, the weather became overcast, so we waited a few more days for the weather to clear. We wanted the weather to be sunny & clear when we began our side trip up to the Canyon ..
However, let's not jump ahead too quickly, let us share the wonderful town of El Fuerte with you first...
|
El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico Upon entering El Fuerte we crossed this huge flowing river. More
often than not in Mexico the 'arroyos', or river beds, do not have any
water in them when we cross the bridges. Well, this one sure wasn't dry!
The river was flowing fast and looked great. |
|
El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico We keep forgetting to mention this... it appears that horses are often
tied by the side of the road to graze all day. We finally figured
out why... they are parked there while their owners are at work in the
fields! I bet this owner gets really good gas mileage :)
Obviously there is no concern of theft, he is just tied with a thin rope
to the fence... |
|
El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico While staying at the RV Park in El Fuerte, we met this wonderful couple,
Lonnie & Diane. They were so friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed
chatting with them about El Fuerte and their thirteen day trip up and into
Copper Canyon. They gave us advise on what was and what was not
worth seeing and we adjusted our plans accordingly. We miss you
Lonnie & Diane!! Copper Canyon photos in Part 4 will be coming soon!! |
|
El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico This is the main entrance into El Fuerte. Talk about history,
look at those dates 1564 to 2005, that's 441 years!! We sure enjoyed
taking pictures, exploring and shopping in this wonderful colonial town. |
|
El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico That is the beautiful town square in the background... |
|
El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico Beside the town square is the Municipal Hall or 'Palacio Municipal', it
was probably THE most beautiful one we have seen in all of Mexico so far.
Enjoy the next several pictures, take notice of the colours, the flowers
and the design of this great building... |

El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico Although your eye may be drawn to the handsome guy on the stairs, take
note of the extensive murals in the background. They depict the history
of this wonderful town... |

And on the other side of the staircase, this lovely woman was posing. The
murals are very nice too! |
|
El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico Isn't this an absolutely stunning picture...it should be in our
'favourite photos' section! |
|
El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico The Mission is right beside the town square also, although we felt it was quite
a plain looking building. Many years after it was built they added
the tower to give it some character and to become a focal point of the
town. |
|
El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico Up close and inside it does have some wonderful features. Notice the
rock work, the ornate design around the entrance, the doors, etc... |
|
El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico And inside was quite lovely also... |

|
El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico We found this beautiful alley-way leading up to a Hotel, Restaurant and
Bar... none of which we frequented, we were just exploring around... |
|
El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico This incredible place is the 'Hotel El Fuerte'. It was so absolutely
beautiful inside and out, we took several pictures... enjoy! |

|
El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico On our way down to the river, we took a picture of this building up
close so that you could see the side of this 'adobe' wall. These
bricks are made from clay and straw and then left to bake in the sun. |
|
El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico One day we rode for miles, on our scooters, along the rivers edge.
We saw a number of beautiful horses grazing right beside the river.
Obviously we forgot our camera that day...so you will have to visualize.
|
|
El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico This is a 'replica' of a fort that that once stood in El Fuerte. It
would usually
cost only 10 or 20 Pesos (a dollar or two) to go into museums, theaters or tourist type places.
It was well worth it and we really got a great sense of the history of
some of these places. |

El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico From the top of the fort we had a great view of the river and the town
below. While Barry was setting up this shot, Cindy positioned
herself on the rock wall to his right. She was not afraid of the drop on the other side of her,
until Barry turned around to speak to her and gasped. Then she said
"Hurry take the picture quick!", and hopped down on to now shaky legs. |

|
El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico Isn't this a great shot! We try hard not to take things for
granted We have remind ourselves to take pictures of things that
happen here all the time, but that you don't see happening in Canada or the
US... |
|
El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico Lunch hour in El Fuerte. Just looking at these places makes my
mouth water for Carnitas, or Fish Taco's or Burritos...yummy! We
refrained on this particular day. As often as possible we try to
make our own special meals at home. When we buy fresh tortillas from
a 'Tortillaria' there is no taste like it! Then, we just load on our
favourite toppings, hmmmm... I think I'll take a break now and go make some
lunch :). |
|
El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico Here is another example of something we see all the time and keep
forgetting to take a picture of. These bicycles are used for all
kinds of things. This particular one is loaded with fresh meat being delivered to this Tienda (store). We have also seen these
bikes used to transport other foods, people, water, boxes and many other
things They are so sturdy and versatile and a lot of people use them. |
|
El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico Wow, talk about history. This is a true Mexican style adobe home!!
Take a moment to look at the details and materials used to
build this structure. |
|
El Fuerte Sinaloa, Mexico This is another example of something we keep forgetting to mention and
take pictures of. The SIGNS!! We often see signs that are so
rusted and crooked it is unbelievable. At least you can still read
this sign, many are so bad you can't read a thing on them. It is so
funny to see, it makes us smile and shake our heads... Everyone is so laid
back in Mexico... maybe they will get around to painting or putting up a new sign
'manana' (tomorrow or another day, or not... :) |
|
Well, that's it for beautiful El Fuerte. Stay tuned for Copper
Canyon in the next segment!
