Travel Log, April 1st - 30th, 2005
Part 6
As we have mentioned several times this month already, April was a very exciting
and busy month and now we present the final section, Part 6. Never before have we
had so much to report in one month. For these final days of April we travel back
to the coast and head south toward Mazatlan. On the way, we travel through
a number of places including Guasave and Culiacan. We also cross the
Tropic of Cancer before getting to Mazatlan.
|
Heading South towards Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico Here are more children, stuffed into the back of this pickup truck.
We think the trucks are sometimes used like a bus, to transport the children to
and from
school, as we often see the children are all dressed in the same uniform.
Anyway, they seem happy and
always send a happy wave or the peace sign. |
|
Heading South towards Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico This picture is priceless. If you look closely you will see a
transport truck driver, in a hammock, below his truck. He is resting
under there, in the shade, reading his book. He sure has the
right idea! |
|
Heading South towards Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico The poor springs on this pickup truck!! The truck is loaded down
with tomatoes. Barry loves this variety of tomatoes, they are oval
in shape and quite a bit smaller than regular tomatoes. Barry eats
them a couple of times a day. We are sure we mentioned (Mom &
Aunt Shirley), that we eat a lot more vegetables down here than we
ever have before (yes, even Cindy!) Cindy is not fond of 'cooked'
vegetables, down here she is in her glory and eats salads and cold plates
loaded with raw, fresh, delicious vegetables every day. |
|
Pemex in Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico Tonight, we are staying at a really nice Pemex (gas station) in Guasave.
It is Hora Felize and we have come to the end of another bottle of Gusano
Rojo. And you guessed it, it's Barry's turn. We probably
should mention again, that no we don't drink everyday, or even every week.
However, we do have a happy hour daily...usually consisting of a mixture
of fresh squeezed limes, Splenda, and ice...delicious and almost no carbs!
Gusano |
|
Pemex in Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico Go for it Barry! |
|
Pemex in Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico He is looking pretty proud of himself. However, notice that the
picture is not really in focus, and we are no longer on the train.
Hmmm makes you wonder how many Cindy has had :) |
|
Pemex in Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico We are sure we mentioned this, however, it is worth talking about again.
When we are travelling between two places, we often stay at a Pemex Gas
Station over night. They are large, clean, and free. We are
never alone as this is also where a lot of truckers stay. It is a
great way to 'dollar cost average'. We try to keep our average RV
Park costs below $10.00
per night over the course of a month. Sometimes it costs more than that, with full hookups, so
this helps even things out a bit. |

|
|
Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico We went for a nice walk behind the Pemex station to take a picture of this corn field.
It goes
on and on as far as the eye can see... |
|
Heading south towards Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico... We see this all the time, people set up their stands on
the side of the road, to sell their wares to passing motorists. This
man had lots of fresh verduras y frutas (vegetables and fruits) to sell. |
|
Heading south towards Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico... As far as we can figure out with this one, and maybe one of our Mexican
friends can help us out here...this vendor is selling some sort of cold
coconut (cocos) and a form of prepared fish (ceviche) ...hmmm...don't take our word for it :)
We think we may have lost something in the translation... |
|
Heading south towards Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico... We often see this kind of thing and thought it was worth mentioning.
They build these huge aqua ducts to supply the farmers with water for their
fields. We see them all over these agricultural areas... |
|
Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico We are now entering Culiacan, and we see our first sign for Mazatlan.
We are so excited to see what Mazatlan has to offer...and we are now
getting so close. |
|
Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico...
|
|
Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico...
|
|
Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico... This is hilarious. First off all, we can't believe we see a Pizza
Hut in Mexico!! This is the first one we've seen, there may have been
some on Baja, however, we sure did not see them. But what is even funnier
is their delivery vehicles...see next picture! |
|
Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico... Aren't these great. This is how they do deliveries in the larger
centers in Mexico. But this was the first time we saw them for Pizza
Hut. We
keep seeing these small motorcycles with a box on the back, delivering all kinds of food.
They zoom along, weaving in and out of traffic on the way to their
destinations. |
|
Heading South towards Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Barry could not resist stopping at this Fruta Stand to buy a nice big
watermelon... |
|
|
|
|
|
Heading South towards Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Barry says that it was juicy and delicious, but as you can also see it
was loaded with seeds! Do you think he is using a large enough
knife? :) |
|
Heading South towards Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico This is something else worth mentioning. All over
this part of Mexico, they are putting in or replacing bridges. At this time of the
year it works great, as there is no water flowing in the arroyo.
They direct traffic down and around the bridge. These are
huge bridges and a great undertaking. We also want to point out, the
roads have been really good for the most part. And there is constant
repaving and construction going on throughout Mexico...we had been told
the roads could be in pretty bad shape. So we are pleasantly
surprised this problem is being rectified. |
|
Heading South towards Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico We have crossed over the Tropic of Cancer again. This is the
third time. Once, going down the east side of Baja, once coming back
up the west side of Baja, and now heading south just before Mazatlan. Very cool.
As mentioned before, Cindy was born under the 'Cancer' sign, and has a
birthday coming up in July... |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Ahhhh...and now for beautiful Mazatlan. When we drove into
Mazatlan,
we were in Nuevo Mazatlan, which is the most northerly section of
Mazatlan. We checked out
the area and found a safe place to boondock, so that we could take our scooters around
in the next day or so, to find the best place to stay and explore Mazatlan. |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico
|
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico This is where we chose to boondock for three nights. We had a
river to our right and the ocean straight ahead of us. It was a
great place to stay until we could explore all of the RV Parks and pick
the best one to stay at. |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico We met this really nice couple that were boondocking in the same location and invited us over for a beverage and a delicious snack. We forget the name of the snack, but it was some sort of local vegetable and it was delicious! This wonderful couple were
heading back to the U.S. and asked us to do them a favour. They asked
if we would mind giving away a number of used eye glasses to people that needed them, and could not
afford to buy their own. We gladly took them and look forward to
passing them on. |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico This was the beach out in front of where we were
boondocking... gorgeous!! |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico What a surprise, one day we were walking the beach and this helicopter
came flying over. It was flying so low, we figure it was used to
show tourists Mazatlan from the air... |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Can words even begin to describe this sunset!!! Ahhh, life is so
very good... |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico
|
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Ok, we have found the RV Park that we want to stay at, it is time to
head into the main part Mazatlan. This park is one of
the last ones still left on the waters edge, as most of them have been
sold out to developers building hotels and resorts. It is right in
the area of Mazatlan called 'Zona Dorado' or 'The Gold Zone', so it will be convenient to everything. |

Mar Rosa RV Park, Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Here we are at the Mar Rosa RV Park. It turns out that we liked it
here so much that we stayed for a month!! We had not planned on this,
Mazatlan and the Staff at Mar Rosa took us by surprise. We loved it
here. These were a couple of the maintenance guys at the park, they kept
everything immaculate. |
|
Mar Rosa RV Park, Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico In the 'Oficina' you will find two of our favourite people Maleno and Estella. They ran the park with great care, and they were so kind to us AND they LOVED Tiki. They nicknamed him "Funny Face". These two were wonderful, kind people. And each night we had Pedro, the funny and easy going Security Guard, looking out for us. We want to take this opportunity to thank the staff of Mar Rosa for
making our stay in Mazatlan so special!! |
|
Mar Rosa RV Park, Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Here is your first glimpse of the RV Park, the view and our special
'amigo' Maleno...When we got here, there was only one other couple with
their RV in the
whole park. We noticed that now that we are going into the month of May,
there are fewer and fewer RV's around. This has it's advantages, as
we usually get the very best spot in the whole park, with the best view!
And that was the case here as you will see in the pictures. |
|
Mar Rosa RV Park, Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico View of the beach in front of the Park. Just gorgeous! |

|
|
Mar Rosa RV Park, Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Another picture of beautiful Mar Rosa RV Park. There were
beautiful swaying palm trees, huge patios, and as you can see we were
snuggled right in the hotel zone. So we had great 'people watching'
opportunities, wonderful strolls down the beach and through the hotel
lobbies. Great places to eat and enjoy 'Hora Felize'. And
vendors selling everything from clothes to food. It was wonderful. |
|
Mar Rosa RV Park, Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Just goes to show you how few people travel in late April! |
| Well, this concludes our six part series for April. It
was a very busy, very memorable month and we will never forget it.
Copper Canyon was obviously the highlight, and we highly recommend it to
any of you that want to visit that area. We look forward to posting photos of our stay in Mazatlan, the month of May was just gorgeous weather wise and Mazatlan turned out to be everything we could have ever hoped for.
