Travel Log, May 1st - 31st, 2005
Part 2
In May, Part 2 we'll tell you more about our wonderful time in Mazatlan.
In this segment of our Travel Log you will get to experience more of the
beautiful parts of Old Mazatlan. We just loved Old Mazatlan, especially
around the square and the market. Enjoy...
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico This is the 'Theater Angela Banks', a beautiful, restored
showcase. It was incredible to see
the photos of what it looked like before the renovations, it was in
ruins. They have done a phenomenal job of bringing it back to its
former glory. You feel like you are stepping back in time when you
go inside. |

|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Pretty spectacular, eh? |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Strolling along the streets, you see these types of windows a lot.
There are French doors that open wide from the inside, then bars for
security on the outside. A lot of the downtown hotels have this kind
of set up. When you discreetly look inside you see beds or tables
and chairs, etc. It is very quaint and makes you want to go in and
stay for a few days. We have seen this type of thing in many of the
larger colonial centers. |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico This is along the outer edge of the Zocalo, or 'Plazuela Republic'. There are vendors set
up all along around, selling their wares. |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Isn't his priceless!! We were sitting on a bench at the square
having our lunch and this gentleman was just down from us. All of
the sudden he starts strumming away on his bass. He was so relaxed and
nonchalant about it. We were so pleased and surprised that we could
just sit back and enjoy. It was a wonderful experience that we will
never forget. We sure do appreciate the Mexican People. They
are so special... |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico This is the same day, everyone is just hanging around the square socializing and taking it easy. The young man at the end of the bench is making bead necklaces to sell to the locals and tourists passing by. You can see our scooters parked across the street in the background. We loved this square so much we would often pack a lunch and zoom off
on our scooters just to sit in the shade and people watch. Just
writing about it brings back such fond memories. |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Here is our very special amigo, Maleno. He became our friend and looked after us so well at Mar Rosa RV Park. We had planned to spend a week there, and the day before he "thought" we were leaving he brought us a gift. It was a beautiful box cover in shells and sand, and had Mazatlan written on the lid. Maleno was so kind and thoughtful. As
it turned out, we ended up extending and extending out stay until we had
stayed for almost a whole month. |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico The neat thing about being in the hotel zone was the easy access to the
restaurants and bars. We really enjoyed the 2 for 1 Margaritas at
Hora Feliz in the near by Holiday Inn. Look at that view! And
look at that Margarita, they were delicious! |

|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico The Malecon (boardwalk) started at that 'castle' you see in the distance
and went all of the way down into Old Mazatlan, you could walk for miles.
The 'castle' you see is actually a disco. Discos are very popular in
Mexico. |

|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico The open air taxis, or Pulmonias as they are called, were a favourite with the tourists in Mazatlan.
There were so many of them and they zoomed along all over the place.
They were so neat. We've noticed in the larger centers that have a
lot of tourists, the taxies are normally all the same, or very close to it.
It's really something to see so many of them zooming all around. For example,
Mazatlan had these and another center had all blue and white Volkswagen bugs
etc. |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Just for fun we went into a brand new condo development to see what it
had to offer. It is too rich for our blood and we don't even want to stay
in one place, as we love travelling all over. However, we
must admit it was beautiful! This was the pool area. To get to
the beach you walked right under the road, it was really cool. The
facilities in this complex were something else. |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico As we mentioned prevoiusly, we decided to pretend we were on holidays and
act like tourists. So, we went to the aquarium and the zoo. It
was great. Here is a picture of a shark, slinking around and around
his aquarium. |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico This was a huge trigger fish. It had to be at least a foot and
half long! Look at those wonderful eyes and teeth, isn't he cute?
He kept coming right up to the glass and pressing his month against it.
It looks like he is smiling :) |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico In this tank, there were ells and a couple of varieties of needlefish. Aren't there designs neat? |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico While at the Aquarium and Zoo, we were able to watch this show with
three seals. It was really cute. Look how that seal is
standing right up and is almost as tall as the young lady. |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico The two seals wait patiently for their turn to perform while the other
seal jumps through the hoop. |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Here, they were all giving kisses to the crowd. |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico What do you think of this fella? |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico This photo reminds me of Fruit Loops! |

|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Another beautiful evening in paradise... |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico This is a good picture to show how large the bay is in Mazatlan.
We took our scooters way up Ice Box Hill to get a good vantage point. |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico We stopped to take a lot of pictures. These steps lead down to a
gorgeous view point as you will see in the next picture. |

Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico This is up the same hill but with a view towards Playa Olas Atlas and, way
in the distance, El Faro. |

|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Barry's favourite beer, so far, in Mexico is a beer called Pacifico.
When we found out that their brewery was in Mazatlan, we arranged a tour.
It was great! Barry used to brew his own beer so it was really
interesting to see their equipment and hear how the beer was made.
However, we were with a whole group of students, and the tour guide spoke
mostly Spanish. Thank goodness they gave us an info sheet, in English, with what
she was talking about. Also it really helped Cindy that Barry
already new how to brew beer, so he explained as we went along.
|
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico They took our picture and gave us a pamphlet with the photo and a
write up about Pacifico. They also let you sample their beer or have
a pop, on the house, at the end of the tour. |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico We have refrained from putting 'all' of the sunset pictures in the
travel log. However, there were so many and they were so beautiful, we could
not resist putting a number of them in. |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Back at the square... There were a number of shoe shiners set up around
the outside of the square. Pretty great set up, eh? A fully
self contained, shady, comfortable place to work. |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico The Mercado Municipal!! What an experience! We enjoyed the market in Mazatlan so much that we now seek out the markets in the larger centers. We know you'll enjoy it also. The markets sometimes span a whole city block or more
and are
full of local people and food, clothes, household goods, etc. This market had
stores all around the outside and all over the inside. Brace
yourself for this wonderful and vibrant experience... |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Another shot of the market from the other side. Notice the traffic
cop, we see them quite often at the main intersections directing traffic.
|
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Fruit stands!! Not one or two but dozens of them. Fresh,
and vibrant in color they are displayed in such a great way. How can
you resist? |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Meat, meat, meat and more meat. Rows and rows of it. Every
kind of cut you can imagine. We love meat and I don't think you
could buy it fresher, unless you butchered it yourself. There are thousands of people walking in and
around the market everyday, they must go through it very quickly. |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Fresh fish of all kinds. Yummy! Oh and please note the
gentleman balancing the box on his head while he makes his purchases.
Doesn't that make you smile? |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico Vibrantly coloured clothes, bags, blankets and toys are all for sale in
the Market. Talk about one stop shopping. |
|
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico We had just walked out of the market when we saw these two guys pushing
their cart up the street. The cart, as you can see, was laden down with fruit. Man, we love this
place! |
| Well, that's it for May, Part 2. May is shaping up to
be another big month for photos. Hope you are enjoying Mazatlan and
getting a sense of what a special place it is.
More to come soon. |
