Travel Log, May 1st - 31st, 2005

Part 3

In this May, Part 3 segment of the Travel Log, we are still in beautiful Mazatlan.  Along the Malecon they have these incredible bronze statues.  We have compiled a series of these wonderful works of art.  We hope you enjoy them as much as we did.

After the statues we'll show you the final pictures of our stay in Mazatlan, including another climb up to El Faro and the celebration of our 5th Wedding Anniversary.

Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico

Most of these bronze statues are life size or larger, they really are something else.

No matter how many times we drove by, it seemed there were always people sitting inside this bronze taxi.  Finally we gave up and just took the picture anyway.  What a hoot!

This is actually a copper Pacifico Beer kettle.  Usually, there is water flowing over the surface of the kettle like a fountain, but on this particular day the water was turned off for some reason.

This is the Monumento al Pescador and it is very large!

The name Mazatlan means, 'Place of the deer' in the ancient Aztec language of Nahuatl.  And so the deer is sort of the cities mascot, so to speak.

Compared to the other statues, this one was very tiny.  She was so pretty, tucked in amongst the trees and bushes.  We almost did not see her.

This picture and the next two pictures are all of the same statues, however, it was so big we had to take three pictures in order to fully capture its beauty.

This one was so adorable.  It was out on a rock, so we could not get closer to it.  It is hard to see the details, however, it is such a sweet one we decided to include it anyway.

Climbing El Faro the second time was not nearly as hard as it was the first time.  It is a very challenging climb.  Today is our 5th Wedding Anniversary and we knew we would be going out for dinner and enjoying numerous snacks today.  So, we thought we would start the day off with some serious exercise.

As most of you know, we decided to dress just like we did for our wedding day in the South Pacific.  We were married on May 20, 2000.  We could not get over how much we looked like we did five years ago.  It was fun to dress up and go out for dinner to celebrate.  We do admit, however, that it felt strange getting all 'dolled up'.  We have dressed and looked like beach bums for so long :)

Maleno from the RV park recommended we go to a restaurant called  El Bigotes, Carnitas El Camino.  They had this incredible salsa called 'Increible Salsa Criminal'.

We are sure glad we did, it was a beautiful, bright, cheery, friendly restaurant, all outside in the shade and sunshine.  Just beautiful.

Can you guess what we had for dinner?  We are sure that many of you guessed 'Carnitas"!!  And they were delicious!  We bought a whole kilo, as we often do when we eat Carnitas, so that we would have leftovers.

What a pretty place...and you can see Barry has a large bag of leftovers.  Yummy!

This beauty was right outside the front of the restaurant.

We were shocked and pleased that the staff of Mar Rosa RV Park decided to spoil us with this incredible cake.  The staff have become very close friends of ours and we are going to miss them so much.   We look forward to going back to Mazatlan again.  Hopefully next year.

Out in front of the RV park, on the beach side, there were all kinds of vendors selling all kinds of things.  This fella was laden down with baskets of every shape, size and colour.

Has anyone in Canada or the U.S. heard of a clothing store called Senor Frogs?  They are all over Mazatlan and other large centers.  We got quite a kick out of their mannequins.  We thought we had taken a picture of the outside of one of their largest stores, however, we must have forgot.  Oh well...

This sweet man is Pedro, the security guard at Mar Rosa.  He was such a card.  We had a lot of fun sneaking around, doing this exaggerated tip toeing, kind of like the cartoon pink panther...  pretending we were hiding behind palm trees.  He would pretend he could not see us and hide.  He was such a funny guy.

He started this game almost as soon as we got to Mar Rosa and we all kept playing it for the duration of our stay.  We miss you Pedro!

Well, that's it for May, Part 3 of the Travel Log, and for our stay in Mazatlan.  We miss it already.

May, Part 4 has us heading down the coast and stopping at a number of places along the way.  It's great to be travelling again!
