Travel Log, June 1st - 30th, 2005

Part 4

For this final part of the month of June we are becoming more and more aware of the heat and the tropical storms.  We want to time our departure from the coast very carefully.  We don't want to leave too soon, as we love the coast and the ocean so much.  However, we want to be safe from the potential storms so we know we need to get off the coast soon.  We are now checking the national hurricane center a couple of times a day, and changing our plans accordingly.  So far so good!   For those of you that offered advice regarding the storms, thank you very much, we took all of that into consideration when making our decisions.

We leave PV and head south, along the coast, to two incredible places, places that we know we will go back to in the future.  First was the wonderful and friendly little town of Punta Perula, we just loved it there.  And then, on to beautiful Melaque, which is becoming quite a tourist destination.  We found a great place to boondock by the waters edge and really enjoyed our stay here.

Leaving Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico

After leaving PV, we drove along this beautiful coastline.

Punta Perula, Jalisco, Mexico

We have now arrived at Punta Perula, this is one place that we know we will return to.  We really enjoyed ourselves here.  The Red Snapper RV park was within easy walking distance to the town square.  We spent countless hours in the town square, eating, drinking and getting to know the locals.  It was one of those little towns that really make you feel welcome.

Punta Perula, Jalisco, Mexico

Cindy said to Barry "Did you see the bright green gecko out there on the palapa", Barry said "Yes but I thought it was a toy".  We went right back outside and took this picture of it.  And believe us it WAS real.

Punta Perula, Jalisco, Mexico

Now, can any of you guess why we liked it here?!  Oh where do we start, the view, the proximity to the beach, the palapa shades or...

Punta Perula, Jalisco, Mexico

...our very own palapa patio right beside the coach.  We did not want to leave.  And again we had the best spot in the whole park.

Punta Perula, Jalisco, Mexico

This was a great spot for fishing and the local fisherman headed out each day.

Click on this movie link to see how these fishermen bring their boat ashore through the surf.

South of Punta Perula, Jalisco, Mexico

Punta Perula was a great place for exploring, we took our scooters all over the place.  Look at the colour of that water.  We have not seen water that colour since the South Pacific.

This lagoon was covered with some type of floating vegetation!

Near this marshy lagoon there were hundreds of turkey vultures.  And, we saw some crocodiles swimming in the distance.

From down on the beach we saw this huge, abandoned hotel up on the hill in the distance.  We decided to go and check it out.

South of Punta Perula, Jalisco, Mexico

Oh, what a shame.  This hotel complex was abandoned and stripped of anything of value including sinks, toilets, fixtures, etc.  It must have been beautiful and the view was spectacular.

South of Punta Perula, Jalisco, Mexico

We are not sure if the hotel was ever completed and did not make a go of it, or if it never got finished.  In any case, the money sunk into it must have been huge.

Look at that view!

After we finished exploring around the hotel, we headed back up the highway and saw this tire hanging from a tree.  This is one of those things that we keep forgetting to mention...  This tire is the typical advertising for a "Llantera", a tire repair shop.  We see this all over Mexico!  What a hoot.  Now that is effective advertising :)

We just could not resist!  Those blue drums are for barbequing whole chickens.  And they are delicious.  We planned to just buy the chicken, but when the lady told us it came with tortillas and the fixins' we went for it!

The restaurant was so clean and bright and she had great Mexican music playing, we sat and enjoyed.

Yuummmyy!!!!  We don't know what spices she uses but our lunch was delicious!

Punta Perula, Jalisco, Mexico

Now why would they be keeping this in their yard?  Doesn't that make you smile?

Punta Perula, Jalisco, Mexico

We had mentioned previously...  When something like a house or vehicle is 'For Sale', they paint 'dollar signs' right on it, indicating that it is for sale and how to contact the owners.

Punta Perula, Jalisco, Mexico

Did we happen to mention it is getting HOT!!

Also, note the 'post it' note on the right side of the photo.  We often describe our motorhome as our 'Home on Wheels' or 'Casa en los ruedas'.  We have found out since that the translation is not completely accurate.  It could better be said as 'Casita sobre ruedas' or 'Little house upon wheels'.  No wonder no one seems to know what we are talking about :)

Punta Perula, Jalisco, Mexico

The waves here are incredible.  They pound on the shore making a huge bang.  They are so forceful we can feel the coach shake.

Punta Perula, Jalisco, Mexico

Barry is referring to the map.  We spend a fair amount of time planning our trip before we venture out.  We usually know where we are staying and how long it will take to get there before we even leave.  We also know what services will be offered and how much it will cost.

Punta Perula, Jalisco, Mexico

Hora Felize...ahh life is good.  We have such a great set up here and we'll really miss it when we have to leave.  We think we would have stayed here a month or so if it was not for Tropical Storm Dora.

At night, we have been getting thunder, lightening and rain.  Gorgeous and hot during the day.  Sometimes we take the scooters out for a ride, just to cool off :)

"Hi, it's Tiki here...  Sorry I have not been in the pictures for awhile, Mom gave me this really bad hair cut and I looked so ridiculous with my big body, big ears and small head.  But now I am cute again and just wanted to say a quick hello :) ."

Punta Perula, Jalisco, Mexico

Ahh, it's a dogs life...

Punta Perula, Jalisco, Mexico

Whatever works!  What a hoot!

Punta Perula, Jalisco, Mexico

Some people have asked us why we take most of our pictures with our sun glasses on.  And, they make the suggestion that we might look better with them off.  We explained the reason why we keep them on, however, in this case a picture is really worth a thousand words...(see next photo).

Look at those waves, they must be at least seven feet high.

Punta Perula, Jalisco, Mexico

We have such a perfect spot.

We mentioned that we got mangos from our new friends, while we were camping at Chacala.  Well, this picture is of a Mango tree.

Punta Perula, Jalisco, Mexico

Isn't it neat how each mango hangs down on a thin branch?  Their shape and size is a bit different compared to the mangos that we've seen in Canada.

Punta Perula, Jalisco, Mexico

This is the square where we hung out so much.  This was the type of place you could stay out after dark and not be concerned for your safety.  There were children all over the place and store owners sat outside in the sun or evening breeze chatting or watching TV between customers.

Heading towards Melaque, Jalisco, Mexico

As hard as it was to leave Punta Perula, we are excited about travelling again.  And very aware of the weather.

Heading towards Melaque, Jalisco, Mexico

In memory of...

Heading towards Melaque, Jalisco, Mexico

This truck was loaded to the hilt with hand made lawn chairs!  As we saw this truck and it's very brightly coloured load, we were so surprised when it got closer and we could identify what it was.

Look at those clouds!

Heading towards Melaque, Jalisco, Mexico

We wanted to see so many places that people recommended in this area, however, we must press on.  Our next stop is Melaque.  Our friends Kim and Mike recommended we check it out.  We are sure glad we did.

This is looking up the beach one way...

 Melaque, Jalisco, Mexico

And this is looking up the beach the other way.  Just beautiful.  Take note of the restaurant off in the distance, to the left of the picture.  It was built right up on top of a hill and you'll see a better picture of it in the next photo.

 Melaque, Jalisco, Mexico

The restaurant seemed to be the start of a beautification project.  There was a beautiful walkway all along the waters edge.

The weather is just gorgeous!

 Melaque, Jalisco, Mexico

On one of our walks, we saw this beautiful little girl playing with her Mom on the sidewalk outside of their home.  Isn't she pretty, look at that hair!

 Melaque, Jalisco, Mexico

Often we'll see crosses on buildings.  In this case, there's one affixed to this fence.  We believe this means that someone was killed on the jobsite when this particular home was built.  Usually, the buildings are too tall to show you the crosses.  However, this home shows it really well.

We have also seen crosses and dedications right on the street, and again we believe this means that someone died there.

 Melaque, Jalisco, Mexico

There were some really beautiful homes in Melaque.

 Melaque, Jalisco, Mexico

Well, that is it for the month of June.  We have more of Melaque to show you in the month of July along with a number of other coastal places before we head inland and up into the mountains.

See you next month!
