Part 11

Moving right along, as we mentioned at the end of Part 10, we spent another day in the wonderful colonial town of Tlaxcala.  We're hoping that you will enjoy the remainder of our tour.

After Tlaxcala, we travel east heading towards to incredible archeological sites, Cacaxtla & Xochitecatl.

This is actually near the end of the first day we spent in Tlaxcala.  One minute the weather was fine and the next it was pouring rain.  In recent times, most days are sunny and beautiful AND each day it rains around 5:00 pm.  We misjudged this day and got caught in the rain.  As you will see, it was well worth it.

Just off the square and up this steep cobble stone hill, we came to an old monastery with it's bell tower, church and courtyard.  We tried to dodge the raindrops and still get some photos in.

We looked down the one side of the hill and saw this bull ring.  Very cool.  This is a very popular sport in Mexico.

When the rain stopped for a moment, we headed to the far end of the property and we were just looking around, when we saw these stairs leading up to a church called Capilla del Vecino.  Although we were starting to get tired and hungry, we decided to go up and take a look.

Near the top, we passed this little girls grandmother, she was working her way up all these steps.  The little girl just hopped right up there and stood looking down at all of us.  She was so cute and friendly.

This was the view from the top.  You can see the city in the distance and in the foreground you can see the bell tower and the area we were just visiting, in behind the stone walls.

Isn't she adorable, she was a bit shy when we asked to take her picture, but she was as cute as a button and really stared to trust us after awhile.

This is the reason she had time to get to know and trust us.  It started to pour, and we mean POUR.  You could hardly see a few meters out in front of the door of the church.  There were seven of us in total that got stuck there, we must have been up there for over at least an hour.

Then it started to hail!!  We wouldn't be going anywhere for quite awhile.

To make the best of it, Cindy and her new friend, played hop scotch, raced from one side to the other side of the entrance and ran backwards.  They had a great time!

When the rain did NOT stop, we finally decided to make a run for it.  It had let up a bit and we made it back down the stairs and hill to the main part of town.  Only to find that a number of the streets were flooded.  We decided to grab a cab and head back to the coach.

The area beside the coach was running just like a river and had been dry earlier in the day.

You can tell by the entrance to their driveways that they know this happens and they planned for it.

This is the start of our second day in Tlaxcala, as you can see the weather is perfect again.  We were on a mission to find this particular Cathedral that was supposed to be really beautiful.  It is affectionately described as the 'wedding cake church' in the guidebooks.  We realized pretty quick this was not it...

We found it!!  Look at the front of this church!  Isn't it something else.  And notice all the tile work.  Just gorgeous!

What a beautiful pipe organ, up on the second level at the back of the church.

We had to walk way up the hill on one side of town to get to the churches, and on our way back down, a different way, we had a birds eye view of this guys back yard.  Oh my...

We also had another great view of the city.

We saw this huge staircase with waterfall from way up on the opposite hillside.  When we were back in town we looked high and low for and could not find it.  We gave up and were looking for a bus to take us back to the coach when by mistake we found it.  Earlier in the day water had been flowing down the blue tiled part in the center and it was really beautiful.

We mentioned that we would tell you what a 'Colectivo' was.  THIS is a Colectivo, they are like mini buses and pick up people anywhere along the road until they are full and then head to their destination.  They are very inexpensive and run all over the place.

Heading East towards Cacaxtla & Xochitecatl, Tlaxcala, Mexico

We are now headed towards two incredible archeological sites called Cacaxtla and Xochitecatl.  You pay one admission and get to see both sites.  It's a full day, great exercise, and well worth the out of the way drive...
