Travel Log, July 1st - 31st, 2005

Part 12

Can you believe that we are finally on our last segment for July!  Twelve parts!!  That's a record for us.  Can you even begin to imagine what we saw and did in ONE month!  No wonder we were starting to get tired part way through August!!  Finally, we started to slow down.  But not yet!

In this segment, you will see two wonderful archeological sites at one location and we will travel to a spot north of Mexico City called San Juan Teotihuacán.  We just loved Teotihuacán and look forward to going back there again sometime.
..

 Cacaxtla, Tlaxcala, Mexico

This is the entrance to the museum at the first archeological site, the name of this site was called Cacaxtla (Ka-kasht-la).

Cacaxtla, Tlaxcala, Mexico

How COOL is that?

Cacaxtla, Tlaxcala, Mexico

What a wonderful display of artifacts.

Cacaxtla, Tlaxcala, Mexico

We wonder what happened to that poor guys head on the left.  My goodness!  Notice the difference in the shape of the center skull, it is much wider in the middle.

Cacaxtla, Tlaxcala, Mexico

This was incredible.  It was right in the floor of the museum with glass over it.  Notice the few artifacts that were buried with this individual.

Cacaxtla, Tlaxcala, Mexico

What a great display of historical art.

If you look closely at this sign you will see a number of things.  First, we start with the site at the top, it is completely covered over with a roof, and is in the process of still being excavated.  The roof has got to be about 300 meters long by 150 meters wide.  It is massive!

Then, we go on a twenty minute hike to the next site which is made up of four main structures, with one of them being round.  That is something we have never seen before today.

Cacaxtla, Tlaxcala, Mexico

Heading towards the first site you can see the massive roof and get a sense of just how big it was.

Cacaxtla, Tlaxcala, Mexico

On the way there we saw this cute little pyramid.

Seeing Cindy in the distance gives you and idea of how big this site is.

Just as a side note, we don't quarrel very often... we have disagreements, but make up quite quickly and easily.  Well, on this day we did not, ooops.  So, for a lot of the day you will see Cindy way off in the distance.  We still had a great day and maybe we just needed some time alone :)  We are best friends and do everything together, so sometimes it catches up to us.

Cacaxtla, Tlaxcala, Mexico

Wow, that is an original painting on the wall down there.  Unbelievable, how bright and clear they are.

More paintings!  Despite being under the big roof, these very old murals have a little roof over them and Plexiglas in front.  In addition, they had installed a roll down blind to protect them from the light (even though this area was very near the center of the big roof, we don't think the sun would EVER reach the murals... oh well...)

These next two shots are quite something.  They are so well preserved we can't believe how lucky we are to be here to see them.  What history!

This is the the beautiful view of the farmlands in the valley.  We had quite the vantage point from up here.  A long time ago, there was a big lake in this valley.  It's gone now, but we could imagine it there, with the crops and fields looking much like they are now.  For over 2000 years this valley has been farmed...  Incredible.

See the three tiny people down there in the center?
..

Xochitecatl, Tlaxcala, Mexico

This is a distant view of Xochitecatl (So-chi-te-catl) and the trail leading to it.  We crossed gardens and fields and climbed hills to get there.  It was a beautiful hike and a great time to contemplate our love for each other.  But we guess we did not contemplate it enough as we were still not talking when we got to the other side.  Watch for Cindy in the distance in the coming photos :).

At the foot of the stairs of this main structure there was this huge, carved rock bowl, probably able two meters in diameter and this small pool about three meters across.

Look at that view!

This is a view back to the other site showing the trail we took to get to this site.

Xochitecatl, Tlaxcala, Mexico

This pyramid was tiered all the way down each side.

Xochitecatl, Tlaxcala, Mexico

Again, look at that view!

The agaves in the foreground must have stood two meters tall.  We are seeing them all over Mexico and they are really something else.

Xochitecatl, Tlaxcala, Mexico

This was one of our favourite pyramids at this site, simply because it was so unusual to see a round pyramid.  Originally, you would start at the base and wind your way around and around until you got to the top.  Now they have stairs leading up to the top.  Still very impressive.

Again look at that view and that fertile land!

There was a small museum and display at this site also.  Outside, these works were displayed...

We are now heading back to the other site...and then back to the coach, where we kiss and make up :)

If you are on our Archeological Tour, follow this link to Teotihuacan...

Heading towards San Juan Teotihuacán, Mexico, Mexico

We are traveling again.  Now we are heading north and west towards a wonderful little town called San Juan Teotihuacán, where we spend over two weeks.  We took a number of side trips from here, which we will discuss in August.

San Juan Teotihuacán, Mexico, Mexico

We are here, and we have to turn where that bus is coming out!!  Oh Oh!!  How are we going to do that, there are no traffic lights, there is lots of traffic and it is a tight turn!  But thanks to Barry's great driving skills we make it, with only a few honks.

San Juan Teotihuacán, Mexico, Mexico

We find the RV Park and as usual we are the only ones here.  It is so quiet we can't believe it.  The lady that owns the park speaks a fair amount of English, she is kind and funny and we just loved her.  We should also mention that although it rains each day around 5:00 pm, it is much cooler up here in the mountains of the interior.  We are enjoying the interior much more than we ever thought we would.

San Juan Teotihuacán, Mexico, Mexico

Look at the size of that tree!

That's right, this is the zocalo...

San Juan Teotihuacán, Mexico, Mexico

And the Government Palace...

San Juan Teotihuacán, Mexico, Mexico

In their square they have all of these little plastic electric cars for the kids to drive around, it is so cute and funny to watch them.  They don't know to watch for pedestrians and almost always collide with someone.  We sat safely on a bench and enjoyed the entertainment.

San Juan Teotihuacán, Mexico, Mexico

Sometimes we just can't resist.  Our lunch was just delicious!  We just love Mexican food.

San Juan Teotihuacán, Mexico, Mexico

We are like a couple of big kids!

San Juan Teotihuacán, Mexico, Mexico

What a beautiful church.  We just had to go and check it out.

San Juan Teotihuacán, Mexico, Mexico

One of these things is not like the others...

We met these two sweethearts selling their cookies outside the cathedral.  We bought some and asked if we could take their picture.  They happily obliged.

San Juan Teotihuacán, Mexico, Mexico

San Juan Teotihuacán, Mexico, Mexico

Stairway to heaven...

San Juan Teotihuacán, Mexico, Mexico

Look at that magnificent door.  We are always impressed by these.  The smaller door at the bottom is big enough to walk upright through.  That gives you and idea how big the whole door is!  They are made of solid wood and must weigh a ton, they have got to be at least 15 cms thick!

San Juan Teotihuacán, Mexico, Mexico

This was a Sunday and so there were a lot of families and teenagers just hanging around in the courtyard of the church.  It was really nice to see, and we relaxed and sat for awhile...

San Juan Teotihuacán, Mexico, Mexico

We just love this statue!!  This is a Fertility God...we guess you can see why it is called that?!?

San Juan Teotihuacán, Mexico, Mexico

At this intersection near the church, the indicators on the road basically say that you can go anywhere you like!  Only in Mexico...

Well, that's it for July!  Thank you for your patience.  Needless to say, it was a daunting task to compile all of these photos and information, but we did it!!  YES!!  We look forward to meeting up with you again next month.  August is not quite as busy as July, but almost.  We have lots more to show you of our day trips around Teotihuacán.  We'll you soon...
