Travel Log, August 1st - 31st, 2005

Part 11

In this section, we visit a famous mine just before leaving wonderful Guanajuato.  We then hightail it north, up to the Reynosa/Texas border to renew our Mexican Visa's.  We travel through the Central Highlands, towards the Coastal Plains, by travelling through some of the most beautiful mountains we have ever seen.  We were so proud of 'George' for how he handled the steep inclines and declines through this area.  Once we are in the US, we replenish and renew supplies so we can get back into Mexico as soon as we can.

Our sweet baby Tiki enjoying being on the road, he is such a great little traveller.  He loves to explore new places almost as much as we do :)

At the entrance to a the hotel parking lot where we have been staying, it was not unusual to see this type of wonderful sight.  A young farmer taking a shortcut with his donkeys and firewood.

In the northern part of Guanajuato we found this wonderful cathedral called 'El Templo de San Cayetano de Valenciana'.

Ah, the famous Mina La Valaencia...  For 250 years, this mine produced 20% of the worlds supplies of silver, gold and other important minerals.  This, is the entrance to the mine complex...

The shaft below this tower is nine meters wide and 500 meters deep.  Although the mine was shut down after the Mexican Revolution, it re-opened in 1968 and is run by a cooperative.  It still produces silver, gold, nickel and lead.

While we were at the mine, we had the good fortune to meet an old miner who used to work here, long ago.  He was documenting the mines history and happened to have this old photo.  Two teams of horses would walk in circles, turning the giant central drum to pull in the ropes that haul the ore to the surface.  We sat and talked to him for quite a while, very pleased with our luck in meeting him.

North of Guanajuato, Guanajuato, Mexico

As much as we don't want to go, and we know we will return some day, it is now time to leave Guanajuato...

Central Highlands, Guanajuato, Mexico

We now just want to get to the US border ASAP to renew our visas.  So, from this point on we make tracks up through the Central Highlands of Mexico...

Ah, a turning point...  Here, we leave highway Mex57 North to head east on Mex31 towards Linares.  If we continued north, we would have to pass through two very large cities... Saltillo and Monterrey.  We prefer to travel around big cities.  We mention this highway in particular because it is AMAZING!  This road twists and winds it's way from this turnoff, at an elevation of 6300 feet, down to Linares at about 1300 feet elevation.  A drop of 5000 feet over a distance of less than 50 miles, as the crow flies.  Most of that elevation drop was over the last 25 miles though, making it one of the steepest downhill runs that we made with George.  Amazing scenery, if you get a chance to travel this road, take it!

The gorgeous, remote, rugged mountains transitioning from the Highlands to the Costal Plains!  Just beautiful!

Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico

And into Reynosa, we can hardly believe we are here already, we travelled long and hard for the last number of days...

US Border Station, McAllen, Texas

This is one of the prettiest border crossing we have ever crossed.  So pretty, that Cindy decided to take some photos of the beautiful butterflies on the building.  We pulled up to the booth, and in a very serious & stern tone, the lady proceeds to ask why Cindy was taking photos.  Cindy innocently explains how much she likes the butterflies, and the lady promptly suggests that she not take photos at border crossings.

The lady then warmed up to us considerably and informed us that they were going to have to confiscate all of the chorizo we just cooked up and froze in the freezer.  We told her we had lots and asked her if she wanted some.  She had a good chuckle and sent us on our way.  The men then confiscated all of our freshly cooked and frozen meat, enough for about a two week period!!  We thought that it would be fine if it was cooked and frozen, but apparently not... Oh well live and learn...

Wow, now that was a lot of travelling in a relatively short period of time.  We are so looking forward to visiting Zacatecas and taking a break from our travels.  See you soon...
