In the month of October, our travels take us across the southern portion of Mexico.  If you recall, we had previously traveled along the southwest coast, but only as far south as Acapulco.

We have returned to Acapulco and will resume our adventure along this most southerly coast and then through the high mountains of Chiapas, and finally onward to Belize.

Pie de la Cuesta, Guerrero, Mexico

We are back at the same RV Park, with the same gorgeous view.  We are just north of Acapulco and we look forward to our stay here.  We are the only ones in the RV Park again, and the beach and surf are gorgeous.  We so look forward to taking the scooters back into Acapulco.

Simply gorgeous!

Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico

Speaking of gorgeous!!

Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico

Breathtaking view and look at the colour of that water!  A very famous Acapulco activity takes place here, in the third cove along the way...  The Acapulco Cliff Divers!  They were not performing at the time we were there, so we didn't get to see them... Maybe next time!

We took a walk up the beach just outside of the RV Park, it was a windy day but nice and warm.

Tiki was able to run free, in and out of the surf and tearing up the beach... When he is really happy he howls.  It is the most adorable thing, and on this day, he was in his glory!  All of the sudden he would sit down, throw back his head, and howl in complete joy!!

Southern Coast of Guerrero, Mexico

We are now heading along the southern coast of Mexico towards Belize...  In so many areas along this stretch of highway, it is SO narrow!  The jungle is literally trying to grow over the road.  In Mexico, road maintenance is NOT the same as it is in Canada and the US.  There are no crews or funds available to cut back the jungle along the road.  So, the wider vehicles (the trucks and RV's) take on the role of trimming the jungle back by hitting the brush and branches when they are forced towards the edge of the road by on-coming traffic.  The side-view mirror on the passenger-side of our coach really took a beating on this stretch of highway... Oh well... we did the best we could.

One of the reasons we only spent a few days in Acapulco is that Hurricane Stan had just gone through Mexico and we really wanted to get on our way.  When we tried to leave Acapulco we were redirected to a different route due to mudslides in Acapulco.

Heading south from Acapulco, this river is swollen over it's banks...

Hurricane Stan did a lot of damage to southern Mexico.  We are seeing so much flooding on our trip along the coast...

Southern Coast of Guerrero, Mexico

On the highway we are traveling, we see a number of places where the roadbed has been compromised by the rain and flooding, causing the highway to cave-in in many areas.

It always makes us smile...  We had to wait for his entire heard to cross the road.  This cowboy had to direct this stubborn fellow who wanted to head up the highway instead of into the field...

More flooding and swollen rivers...

More narrow roads...  We think the most damage to the motorhome was done in this area.  We basically cut the hedges as we drove along, especially when a transport truck or large bus was coming the other way.  We are happy to report that minimal damage was done, a few scratches on the back of the mirror and up by the front upper right  fiberglass panel.  Nothing too serious...

Southern Coast of Oaxaca, Mexico

We are now leaving the state of Guerrero and heading into Oaxaca..

Mudslides from Hurricane Stan...

Southern Coast of Oaxaca, Mexico

We have noticed in Mexico that the drivers of  large and small buses drive far to fast.  They are taking chances with their lives and the lives of their passengers every time they get on the road.  We have to drive very defensively knowing they drive the way they do...

We were shocked when we saw this, possible head on collision, and vowed to sit in the middle of the bus instead of the front, the next time we are on a bus...

Imagine what this flooding has done to their crops and source of income...  this is one of the poorest parts of Mexico, and it breaks our heart to see this...

These stunning views of the Pacific will be the last that we see for awhile.  We are now heading inland and the next large body of water we'll see will be the Caribbean...

Hope you enjoyed our second visit to Acapulco and our travels along part of the southern coast of Mexico.  Having traveled through southern Mexico so soon after Hurricane Stan, we certainly have a  healthy respect for mother nature.

In the next part of our travel log, we continue our travels high up into the mountains of Chiapas and have a wonderful few days at the city of San Cristobal de las Casas, before heading to Palenque.  Come and enjoy!
